SUMMARY:River on Fire - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:River on Fire\, Installation documentation\, 2024. Photos: Sol Diaz-Peña.\nRiver on FireOpening Friday\, September 27\, 5 – 8 pmSeptember 28 – November 16\, 2024Gallery Hours: Thursdays – Saturdays\, 12 – 6 pmAdmission: Free \nRiver on Fire is a multidisciplinary exhibition showcasing the work of 14 artists who respond to environmental crises and climate change. Curated by Ashley DeHoyos Sauder\, the exhibition draws inspiration from a long history of environmental activism related to river fires across the nation— events that have significantly shaped understandings of ecological preservation and environmental advocacy.  \nThe featured artists: Carolina Aranibar-Fernández (San Francisco\, CA)\, Brandon Ballengée (New Orleans\, LA)\, Alana Bartol (Calgary\, Alberta\, Canada)\, Christina Battle (Edmonton\, Alberta\, Canada)\, Hannah Chalew (New Orleans\, LA)\, Lili Chin (New York\, NY)\, Willow Naomi Curry (Houston\, TX)\, Heather L. Johnson (Houston\, TX)\, Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud (Houston\, TX)\, Laura Napier (Ann Arbor\, MI)\, Kristi Rangel (Houston\, TX)\, Joe Robles IV (Pasadena\, TX)\, Manuel Alejandro Rodríguez-Delgado (Roswell\, NM/Puerto Rico)\, and Zuyva Sevilla (Albuquerque\, NM) bring attention to pressing ecological issues. Through artistic research and lived experience\, they highlight the unique environmental challenges facing local\, regional\, and national landscapes. View artist bios \nThrough creative action and building a historical understanding of these types of cataclysmic events\, River on Fire seeks to provide a platform for conversation and awareness of ongoing environmental issues. The relationship between living in a city dominated by industry and co-existing with environmental disaster in the wake of climate change has brought the city’s resilience into question and increased concerns over the continuation of industry practices that place people and the natural world at risk. As Houston continues to grow\, the effects of climate change have become increasingly severe— record heat waves\, flooding\, more frequent and intense hurricanes\, and massive power outages are clear signs that we already have to confront new and different ways of being. River on Fire asks: how do artists and creative practices shift the narrative and introduce possible solutions in a city with such a complex ecosystem? \nRiver on Fire includes internal evaluations of DW exhibition practices and implementation of sustainable exhibition design developed through a year-long Climate Coaching Pilot with the Teiger Foundation and Rute Collaborative\, a Canadian-based environmental consultant. The impetus for the project comes in part from Houston’s entwined history with the oil\, gas\, and chemical industries and the curator’s youth spent living in Houston-area neighborhoods close to these industries.  \nRiver on Fire is presented in conversation with the eighth iteration of the Texas Biennial The Last Sky\, co-curated by Ashley DeHoyos Sauder\, Erika Mei Chua Holum\, and Coka Treviño. Biennial artists featured in River on Fire include Brandon Ballengée\, Heather L. Johnson\, Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud\, Laura Napier & Zuyva Sevilla. \nCheck back for updates on related programs. \nRELATED PROGRAMS\nthe air we breathe online workshop with Christina BattleOctober 7 – November 1\, 2024 \nArt + Climate Justice SymposiumNovember 8 – 10\, 2024Keynote Speaker: Dr. Kirsty RoberstonCLICK TO REGISTER \nPRESS\nRead Survival and Perseverance: River on Fire at DiverseWorks Centers Climate Justice\, Arts and Culture Texas (Sep 2024).Read New Exhibition Tackles Complicated Emotions Of Pollution And People\, Texas Signal Media Foundation (Oct 2024).Listen to Ashley DeHoyos Sauder\, Kristi Rangel\, Willow Naomi Curry\, and Heather L. SUMMARY:River on Fire - Art + Climate Justice Symposium
DESCRIPTION:  \nArt + Climate Justice Symposium\nNov 8 – 10\, 2024\nAdmission: Free \nThe River on Fire: Art + Climate Justice Symposium centers on topics such as the legacy of oil and gas\, the Gulf Coast as a precarious region\, and artistic and curatorial sustainable practices. The symposium features a full day of panel discussions\, art breaks\, and opportunities for socializing and building community.\n \nHoustonians have become increasingly aware of the city and region’s vulnerability to climate change. Record heat\, flooding caused by heavy rain\, tropical storms\, hurricanes\, and more recently— record freezing temperatures that knocked out the Texas power grid—make it harder to deny our current climate crisis. SUMMARY:Praise Music Sonogram
DESCRIPTION:February 6 – 8\, 2025 | 7 PMMatchbox 1 @ MATCHAdmission: Pay-what-you-wish. $25 suggested.GET TICKETS\nJulia Barbosa Landois’s Praise Music Sonogram is a live performance that combines spoken word\, video\, and experimental sound to tell a story of motherhood\, miscarriage\, and abortion access across national and state borders. Contrasting an unexpected experience in a European haven for healthcare seekers with the medical scarcity and the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade in the U.S.\, Barbosa Landois delivers a narrative that is both deeply personal and unexpectedly comedic. \nCollaborating with Julia Barbosa Landois on this production are Candice D’Meza (Director)\, Andrew Martinez (Musician and Live Performer)\, and Edgar Guajardo (Technical Director). The performance is accompanied by a storytelling and knowledge-sharing zine\, Tía Sabiduría\, that is informed by the DIY aesthetic of Barbosa Landois’ youth. Special thanks to zine co-designer Tina Hernandez and to the following local organizations that helped shape and/or were part of outreach actions for this project: Deeds not Words\, Fund Texas Choice\, Houston Women’s Reproductive Services\, MECA\, Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast\, and ZineFest Houston. \nPraise Music Sonogram exists where storytelling\, community medicine\, and transnational healthcare persist as resistance to geographic borders and limits on bodily autonomy. In development as part of a 2023 NPN Creation Fund grant from August 2023-December 2024\, the work premieres at DiverseWorks before traveling to the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts at the University of El Paso and Links Hall\, Chicago. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nJulia Barbosa Landois is a Houston-based multidisciplinary artist whose work teases profundity and absurdity from the everyday and examines the relationship between the intimate and the public. Her unsettling and sometimes funny performances often use commonplace technologies like a cell phone or stationary bike in unexpected ways. Her work is included in the current exhibition Xican-a.o.x. Body (Pérez Art Museum\, Miami\, June 13\, 2024 – February 16\, 2025)\, curated by Cecilia Fajardo-Hill\, Gilbert Vicario\, & Marissa Del Toro. Landois’s live performances have been presented at Fusebox Festival (Austin)\, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston\, Blaffer Art Museum (University of Houston)\, Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara\, and Blue Star Contemporary (San Antonio)\, among others. Awards include grants from the National Association of Latino Arts & Cultures (NALAC)\, Puffin Foundation\, and Houston Arts Alliance\, and residencies at Lawndale Art Center\, Santa Fe Art Institute\, and Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Germany). \nSUPPORT\nPraise Music Sonogram is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation & Development Fund Project co-commissioned by DiverseWorks\, The Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts\, and NPN. For more information: www.npnweb.org. \nPraise Music Sonogram is supported in part by the Alice Kleberg Reynolds Foundation. Additional program and general operating support is from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance\, Texas Commission on the Arts\, The Brown Foundation\, Inc.\, Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts\, Houston Endowment\, Ruth Foundation for the Arts\, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts\, and Teiger Foundation.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception - Anahita (Ani) Bradberry: Spectral Field
DESCRIPTION:OPENING RECEPTION September 19\, 2025 | 6 – 9 PMCurator/Artist Talk 6:45 PM\nSpectral Field is a newly commissioned plasma sculpture installation by Austin-based artist Anahita (Ani) Bradberry that investigates the mindset required to imagine the unfathomable: the baffling cosmic scales of stars\, time\, particles\, displacement\, loss\, and interconnectedness. The exhibition seeks to offer an atmosphere of contemplation and lucidity\, observing the moment when an idea that seems too vast is transformed into a visceral and comprehensible feeling. \nIn choreography with the cycle of the sun and moon through the gallery\, the work is both a constructed celestial environment rooted in place and time as well as a psychological space for communing with the ineffable. Visitors are invited to spend time with the work\, from the day to evening hours\, to watch and consider the passage of time. \nThe installation will include aspects of Bradberry’s collaboration with scientist Christopher M. Johns-Krull\, a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University\, as part of the Open Interval Cohort—a collaborative program for artists\, scientists\, and art organizations—awarded by the Simons Foundation’s Science\, Society and Culture division. \nSpectral Field will be on view through November 8\, 2025. Gallery Hours are Thursdays – Saturdays\, 2–8 pm. Admission is free. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nAnahita (Ani) Bradberry (b. 1993\, New Haven\, CT) is an Iranian-American artist and writer creating sculptural situations with plasma light. She earned an MA in Art History from American University (Washington\, DC)\, conducting primary research in Tokyo with the help of a Mellon Grant and lecturing on her research at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2016. She later assisted in the archival projects at the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art as a Research Assistant. In 2024\, the City of Austin and the Trail Conservancy commissioned the monumental Sun Poem through the TEMPO Public Art Program: a year-long installation at the historic Seaholm Water Intake Facility landmark in downtown Austin. Bradberry’s work has been included in exhibitions at ArtSpring Lichtkunstfest (Berlin)\, Dominique Gallery (LA)\, Two Six Eight Bowery (NYC)\, the Washington Project for the Arts (DC)\, Transformer (DC)\, VisArts (VA)\, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center (DC)\, George Washington University’s Gallery 102 (DC) and CICA the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art (South Korea)\, Blaffer Art Museum (Houston) and in Austin at Big Medium\, Women & Their Work\, Co-Lab Projects\, and MASS Gallery.

The Diverse Discourse Lecture and Studio Visit Program brings curators and artistic directors to Houston to share their knowledge and ideas through free public lectures and visits with local artists. \nLouise Martoranos’ talk\, It’s Not Out of Reach\, will take place at the DiverseWorks Gallery @ MATCH at 6:30 pm on Tuesday\, December 9\, and is co-hosted by Lawndale Art Center. Artist careers are often volatile and can be a rollercoaster when it comes to economic stability\, financial security\, and dependable infrastructure. This talk and discussion place these challenges at the center of our attention\, offering strategies for artists to skillfully approach uncertainty across issues of space\, ownership\, financial stability\, and scarce opportunities. Drawing on 17 years of experience in supporting artists’ careers and in caring for our arts and culture ecosystems\, the goal of this talk is to reassure participants that the path to being an artist with a sustainable career is not out of reach. \nAPPLY FOR A STUDIO VISIT: \nDeadline: December 1\, 2025Houston-area artists working in all disciplines (including visual artists\, writers\, dancers\, choreographers\, and performance artists) are invited to apply through Submittable. Artists selected by the visiting curator will be notified in early December. \nVISITING SPEAKER BIO:\nLouise Martorano has 20 years of nonprofit arts and culture experience with a focus on building infrastructures of support to stabilize artists careers. SUMMARY:Hong Hong: The Past Does Not Need You\, But It Borrows Your Mouth
DESCRIPTION:Performances: March 17-18\, 20267:30 PM\, doors 6:30 PM \nDiverseWorks presents The Past Does Not Need You\, But It Borrows Your Mouth\, an exhibition of newly commissioned works by Hong Hong. This multidisciplinary presentation weaves together a four-channel video installation\, sculpture\, and live performance. Together\, these works consider geography as a poetic structure\, time as acquisition\, history as erosion\, and language as something transmitted through nonlinear experience. \nThe exhibition unfolds as two coexisting experiences. On March 17 and 18\, the gallery will be open from 12–5 PM for visitors to experience the video installation and sculpture. Evening live performances at 7:30 PM (doors open at 6:30 PM) will activate the space\, bringing all components of the work together in a unified\, time-based presentation. \nThe presented works extend from a series of durational performances on Angel Island and the Marin Headlands between 2025 and 2026. In each performance\, Hong Hong continuously walked the island’s perimeter and along the California coast. This repetitive circumambulation marked the island and shoreline’s spiritual resonance\, notating them as sites where miracles occurred. \nThe Past Does Not Need You\, But It Borrows Your Mouth continues ongoing research from Hong Hong’s residency with DiverseWorks in Fall 2025. \nDATES & TIMES:\nOPEN INSTALLATIONFour-channel video installation and sculptureTuesday\, March 17 & Wednesday\, March 18\, 12 PM – 5 PMFree admission. No tickets required. \nLIVE PERFORMANCES*Tuesday\, March 17\, 7:30 PM\, doors open 6:30 PMWednesday\, March 18\, 7:30 PM\, doors open 6:30 PMPay-what-you-wish\, $25 suggested. All are welcome. Tickets required. \n*Ticket holders are encouraged to arrive at 6:30 PM to experience the video installation before the start of the performance. \nARTIST BIO:\nBorn in Hefei\, Anhui\, China\, Hong Hong works with image-making and language through repetition\, disruption\, movement\, accumulation\, limitation\, translation\, evaporation\, and dispersion. She considers the materiality of the body\, the histories of craft\, the semiotics of poetry as well as the field of painting in relation to identity\, memory\, nations\, and land. Hong’s practice centers the creation and preservation of a Chinese-American subjectivity rooted in largeness\, multiplicity\, opacity\, self-definition\, and self-determination. \nHong Hong is the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship in Fine Arts (2025)\, Chiaro Award in Painting at Headlands Center for the Arts (2025)\, Tulsa Artist Fellowship (2024 – 2026)\, United States Artists Fellowship in Craft (2023)\, Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in Painting (2023)\, Carnegie Foundation Fellowship at MacDowell (2020)\, Helen Frankenthaler Foundation Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center (2019)\, and Artistic Excellence Fellowship from the Connecticut Office of Arts (2019). She has participated in residencies at McColl Center for Art + Innovation (2022)\, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (2020 – 2021)\, Yaddo (2019)\, and I-Park (2018). \nHer work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions at Real Art Ways (Hartford\, CT)\, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (Bentonville\, AR)\, Oklahoma Contemporary (Oklahoma City\, OK)\, Georgia Museum of Art (Athens\, GA)\, Ortega Y Gasset Projects (New York\, NY)\, Center for Maine Contemporary Art (Rockland\, ME)\, NXTHVN (New Haven\, CT)\, Fitchburg Art Museum (Fitchburg\, MA)\, Tephra Institute for Contemporary Art (Reston\, VA)\, San Francisco Center for Book Arts (San Francisco\, CA)\, Tiger Strikes Asteroid (Los Angeles\, CA)\, Akron Art Museum (Akron\, OH)\, Asia Society Texas Center (Houston\, TX)\, and University of Texas at Dallas (Dallas\, TX)\, among others.

Admission is free. \nThrough satire and spectacle\, NuestroWorld examines how cities construct identity through tourism\, branding\, memory\, and myth\, inviting audiences to reconsider Houston’s past and present. The exhibition draws inspiration from pivotal moments in Houston and Texas history\, including the opening of the Astrodome and Astroworld in the late 1960s\, Selena’s iconic Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo performances in the 1990s\, and the folklore surrounding Santa Anna’s capture following the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836\, highlighting the city’s recurring cycles of ambition\, folly\, and heartbreak. The title plays on “Astroworld” and uses Spanglish to create the phrase “The World Is Ours\,” reframing Houston’s cultural mythology through humor\, nostalgia\, and critical reflection. \nOpening Reception\nThursday\, August 13\, 6 – 8 pm\nArtist and Curator Talk: 6:45 pm \nClosing Party\nFriday\, September 11\, 2026\, 6 – 8 pm\n7 pm: special performance by CTS Trio – Queen of Tejano & Latin Tribute \nARTIST BIO:\nJesus Benavente is a visual artist based in Brooklyn\, New York\, and born in San Antonio\, Texas.
