SUMMARY:DiverseWorks on Wednesdays
DESCRIPTION:Fig Pudding Performs\norganized by Regina Agu and Sandy Ewen \nFig Pudding will perform a series of original scores written by Regina Agu\, Carol Sandin Cooley\, Megan Easley\, Sandy Ewen\, Gabriel Martinez\, Rebecca Novak\, Rachel Orosco\, Carrie Schneider\, Ronnie Yates\, and Hanna Yoo. \nFig Pudding is the current iteration of an evolving music and performance ensemble that performs improvisation\, graphic scores\, performance pieces\, and occasionally more traditional forms of composition. Sandy Ewen founded the all-female group in 2009 as a way to capitalize on the under-utilized resource of creative women in experimental music. The group has changed its name to a different fruit flavor for every performance. Memorable performances include: the Pawpaw Pomelo show atop the Mekong Plaza on July 4\, 2010\, wherein the band accompanied live fireworks with an amplified vocal performance; the Pina Colada show at NMAS in Austin\, Texas wherein the band collaborated  with video artist Rebecca Carlisle-Healy; the Durian Durian show at the Menil Collection\, which showcased site-specific performance pieces; and the Gooseberry Marmalade show at 14 Pews in Houston wherein the band performed Scratch Orchestra pieces in collaboration with Keith Rowe. The group has a CDr release\, but all the copies have gone missing. The CDr was fondly referred to as the “touchy-feely” album because of the fake fur that was glued on the covers. \nRegina Agu is an interdisciplinary artist and has performed with Fig Pudding since 2012. Agu was born in Houston and raised in transit throughout Africa and Europe. She is a graduate of Cornell University. Agu’s work has been included in exhibitions\, public readings\, and performances at New Museum\, labotanica\, Project Row Houses\, University Museum at Texas Southern University\, Box 13\, and Lawndale Arts Center\, among other venues. She is a 2012 Houston Arts Alliance Individual Artist Grant recipient and a 2014 The Idea Fund grantee. Agu is a current member of the DiverseWorks Artist Board. \nSandy Ewen plays electric guitar. Born in Toronto\, Canada in 1985\, Ewen received a Bachelor of Architecture from The University of Texas at Austin in 2008. Since then she has resided in Houston\, TX where she pursues her musical and visual projects and her architecture license. Ewen has performed music throughout North America as a collaborative improviser and member of the Weird Weeds. Lately\, Ewen has been focusing on her visual art\, frequently presenting it alongside experimental music. \nDiverseWorks on Wednesdays is supported in part by Saint Arnold Brewing Company and Topo Chico USA. \n  \n

Also on this program\, David Dove will honor Joe McPhee and Arthur Doyle in a solo performance of selections from a significant historical concert of McPhee and Doyle\, curated by Dove for DiverseWorks in 1998. \n\nBaltimore/Houston/Baltimore: Fiona Sergeant and Will Schorre (video); Damon Smith (double bass); Sandy Ewen (guitar and objects); Rebecca Novak (shortwave radio\, amplified autoharp\, morse code key)\nJohn Cage’s Radio Music for 1 – 8 radios\, 1956:  Performed by Austin Cooley\, Sandy Ewen\, Eddie Hawkins. Rebecca Novak\, Carol Ann Sandin\, Shaun Sandor. Damon Smith\nSelections from Joe McPhee/Arthur Doyle concert of January\, 1998: David Dove (trombone). Dedicated to Joe McPhee and Arthur Doyle (June 26\, 1944 – January 25\, 2014)\n\nIn January of 1998\, DiverseWorks presented a concert featuring two major veterans of jazz’s radical avant-garde\, Joe McPhee and Arthur Doyle. The concert was curated by then-artist board member David Dove. In addition to the performance\, McPhee and Doyle gave workshops for the kids in Dove’s improvisation ensemble at MECA. The residency would plant the seed for what would become Pauline Oliveros Foundation Houston (POF Houston)\, founded and directed by Dove. POF Houston would eventually become Nameless Sound. To celebrate this history and remember this event\, Dove will perform selections from that evening in honor of Joe McPhee and Arthur Doyle (who passed away on January 25 of this year). \nIMAGE: David Jordan. SUMMARY:DiverseWorks on Wednesdays
DESCRIPTION:Screening of Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson’s Sound Designs for Future Films \n \nPerformance: Critical Mass\nA suite of solos performed on a stage of lights developed by artist Ronny Quevedo\nPerformers: Stephen Araujo\, Lisa E. Harris\, Autumn Knight and Jesus Romero \nSound Design for Future Films inverts the hierarchy and workflow of typical film production\, starting with a two-and-a-half minute sound design for a scene in a film that doesn’t exist. Dubbin and Davidson began with the narrative aural details necessary to construct a scene\, sounds that describe activities within an environment\, sounds that are not dialogue or music. These sounds are drawn from sound libraries and are composed to propose an oblique-narrative. \nThe sound design serves as the primary source material in a collaboration with other artists. They gave this scene to 20 different artists to create the image component. Each artist was given complete control concerning their visual contribution\, Dubbin and Davidson only asked that the audio remain unaltered. \n  \n

SUMMARY:DiverseWorks on Wednesdays
DESCRIPTION:Performances in conjunction with the exhibition SonicWorks: \nThe Drone Bros + Robert Hodge presents a Beauty Box Pop-Up Show with Outspoken Bean and The Aspiring Me \nDrone Bros are a sonic performance art group. They create temporary\, performance-based sound sculptures that bring together elements of experimental and pop music. \nGiven that music and sound have a physiological affect on the human body\, the Drone Bros use droning notes in an attempt to affect the body and mind of the listener/observer. By hearing the same frequency over an extended period of time\, the human mind and body can experience different states of awareness\, therefore the sound sculpture is a visceral and concrete way to engage people into different states of awareness. \nThe Drone Bros seek to continue and develop the long-standing and arguably ancient tradition of drone music through the appropriation of pop music. Taking elements from their  own experiences as musicians\, they use guitars\, synthesizers\, talkbox\, drum machines\, and other electronic devices\, while taking musical influence from rock\, blues\, funk and rap music. \nRobert Hodge is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice explores themes of memory and commemoration. Born in Houston\, Texas and raised in the City’s Third Ward district\, the artist studied visual art at the Pratt Institute in New York and the Atlanta College of Art before returning to Houston. Hodge has exhibited his work in numerous national and international institutions including Project Row Houses in Houston\, the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, the Contemporary Arts Museum\, Houston\, the New Gallery of Modern Art in Charlotte\, North Carolina\, Coma Art Space in Los Angeles and the Contemporary Museum of East Africa in Nairobi\, Kenya. Named amongst the Houston Press’ 100 Most Creative People in 2011\, the artist has also received grants from the Houston Arts Alliance and The Idea Fund. Hodge currently lives and works in Houston. \nThe Beauty Box is an outdoor public installation illuminating a particular time in an average Third Ward home prior to integration. The project transformed an abandoned portion of a building into an installation and gallery space where artist talks\, round table discussions\, performances and other public events are held. \n

SUMMARY:DWOW: QuAC and Houston Poetry Festival
DESCRIPTION:QuAC: A Screening and Discussion with Sixto Wagan and Chuck Jackson \nQuAC: Queer Artist Collective performed many times on DiverseWorks’ stage. QuAC was a multi-ethnic performance group of twenty-something men and women charged to “fearlessly be themselves.” Growing out of New York’s Gay and Lesbian Community Center’s Youth Enrichment series and Mary Ellen Strom’s School’s Out — The Naming Project\, QuAC acted as a community building endeavor for not only the artists themselves\, but for DiverseWorks as an organization. QuAC brought a diverse group of individuals from the LGBT community together in order to build self-esteem and and encourage self-reflection through the process of creative writing\, movement\, and video. \nHouston Poetry Fest Satellite Readings by Brother Said\, Savannah Blue\, and Equality \nThe Houston Poetry Fest has been celebrating the crafted word in Houston since 1985. The main event will be held at the University of Houston-Downtown on October 11-13 and will include readings by guest poets and juried winners of the Fest’s popular anthology competition as well as a new feature: Saturday morning workshops on writing poetry and getting published by several top Houston poets and writers. Workshops will be held at the Hardy & Nance Studios at 902 Hardy Street. \nFor many years\, the Fest has included the off-site event Poetry Out of Bounds in Clear Lake. However\, this year HPF is presenting a series of Satellite Readings at popular poetry venues around town\, to represent Houston’s dynamic Spoken Word community. Each reading will be hosted by a recognized poetry organization to introduce new audiences to Houston’s rich and growing poetry scene. \nSponsored in part by Saint Arnold Brewing Company

SUMMARY:DWOW: Karen Finley
DESCRIPTION:Artist Karen Finley will give a dramatic reading of four selected excerpts from “We Keep Our Victims Ready”\, first performed at DiverseWorks over two evenings in October 1989. About the oppressed in contemporary America\, “We Keep Our Victims Ready” is a confrontational and powerful work of art that Finley has reframed in the context of current social and political issues: war\, reproductive rights\, freedom of expression\, and identity. \nFinley’s reading will be followed by a discussion and Q & A moderated by DiverseWorks Assistant Curator Rachel Cook and UH Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Jessica Santone. This event is free. \nKaren Finley is a New York-based artist whose raw and transgressive performances have long provoked controversy and debate. Finley was one of four artists whose NEA grant applications were vetoed due to content considered “indecent.” Finley and the other three artists sued for reinstatement and won the case in 1993 in the ninth circuit court in Los Angeles. In May 2013\, Finley’s performance and installation\, Sext Me if You Can\, was presented as part of NEA 4 in Residence at the New Museum in New York. For this interactive performance installation\, Finley created a limited edition of paintings inspired by “sexts” that she received from participating patrons. Other current projects include “Unicorn in Red” (an ongoing series of performances in which Finley receives automatic messages from those departed and turns those messages into artworks)\, and Open Heart (a public memorial for children killed during the Holocaust created in collaboration with survivors\, children\, and locals). Finley is a professor at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in the department of Art and Public Policy. \nPresented in partnership with the University of Houston’s School of Art and Visiting Assistant Professor Jessica Santone.
