SUMMARY:DIVERSE DISCOURSE LECTURE: CHRISTOPHER K. MORGAN
DESCRIPTION:Join DiverseWorks and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts for the Spring 2022 Diverse Discourse Lecture with Christopher K. Morgan\, choreographer\, educator\, and Vice President of Programming\, Maui Arts & Cultural Center. \nWednesday\, April 6\, 2022\, 6:30 pm\nDudley Recital Hall\nFine Arts Building\, Room 132\nUniversity of Houston\nCampus Map \nIntegrating Identity in Artistic Practice: Decentralizing Eurocentrism in My Dancing Body\na Diverse Discourse Lecture by Christopher K. Morgan \n\nAs a multi-racial\, multi-hyphenate artist I have spent a substantial portion of my career in primarily western influenced art forms that often overshadowed the Native Hawaiian and Polynesian dance forms I learned as a child. For more than 10 years\, I have been on a journey to holistically integrate the multitude of identities I hold into my creative practice. As choreographer\, artist\, and writer Liz Lerman says “Artists can hold many truths at once.” I draw inspiration from this notion as I re-indigenize my practice\, embracing the totality of who I am as human in my artistic practice\, and share this ongoing journey in this Diverse Discourse Lecture.\n\n\nADMISSION: The lecture is free to attend; seating is first-come\, first-served. \nPARKING:  Enter the University of Houston Campus from Elgin Street and turn into Entrance 18 to park in the Elgin Street Parking Garage. UH Visitor Parking Map \nACCESSIBILITY: ASL interpretation will be provided. \n \nSTUDIO VISITS: Houston-area artists may apply for a studio visit with Christopher. Application deadline is Friday\, March 18. Click here for guidelines and the online application portal. \nABOUT CHRISTOPHER K. MORGAN\nChristopher K. Morgan (he/him) is a choreographer\, educator\, facilitator\, curator\, and arts administrator. Known as a thoughtful advocate for cultural integrity\, inclusivity and diverse representation in the studio and on stage\, his Native Hawaiian ancestry and wide-ranging international performance career influence all aspects of his work. Morgan founded his contemporary dance company Christopher K. Morgan & Artists in 2011 to create performances that explore identity\, social\, and cultural issues. Grants and awards include a 2013 Native Arts & Cultures Foundation Fellowship\, 2014 and 2019 NPN Creation Funds\, 2014 and 2019 NEFA National Dance Project Production Grant\, 2018 Native Launchpad Award from the Western Arts Alliance\, and a 2019 Dance USA Fellowship for Artists. \nMorgan is currently Vice President of Programming at Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Previously\, Morgan was Director of the Center for Native Arts and Culture (CNAC)\, Portland\, OR. Prior to that\, Morgan was  Executive Artistic Director of Dance Place in Washington\, D.C.\, where he stewarded the organization through the triple pandemics of 2020 maintaining the entire staff with no layoffs or furloughs while continuing to pay artists and teachers. At Dance Place\, he oversaw the curation of over 30 weekends of performances and artist-centered projects annually\, a school for youth and adults\, and continued Dance Place’s role as a neighborhood community arts center and nationally prominent performing arts presenter. \n\nThe 2021-22 Diverse Discourse Lecture Series is supported in part by HOK and Lovett Commercial.

SUMMARY:DIVERSE DISCOURSE LECTURE: AMANDA CACHIA
DESCRIPTION:Join DiverseWorks on September 30 for the Fall 2021 Diverse Discourse Lecture\, Curating Access: Disability Art Activism and Creative Accommodation\, with Amanda Chachia\, independent curator and critic. \nNOTE: Due to a shift in circumstances\, this event is now online only. The talk is free to attend\, but registration is required to receive the Zoom link:\nRegister for the Zoom Event\nWatch the livestream on YouTube \nABOUT THIS PROGRAM\nCurating Access: Disability Art Activism and Creative Accommodation\nOftentimes exhibitions tack on access once the artwork has already been executed and ready to be installed in the museum or gallery. But what if artists were to ponder access as an integral and critical part of their artwork? Can access be creative and experimental? And furthermore\, can the curator also fold access into their practice\, while working collaboratively with artists\, considering it as a theoretical and practical generative force that seeks to make an exhibition more engaging for a wider diversity of audiences? This talk will consider how a growing number of artists\, curators\, and scholars ponder these ideas through experimental approaches within exhibition-making and artistic practices. \nThe Diverse Discourse Lecture & Studio Visit Series brings national curators\, artistic directors\, and critics to Houston to present a free public lecture and conduct studio visits with  Houston-area artists\, performers\, and writers. \nLive ASL interpretation will be provided for this talk\, which will also be streamed to DW’s YouTube Channel. \nStudio Visits: Houston-area artists may apply for a studio visit with Amanda Cachia through the DiverseWorks Submittable application portal. The portal opens Thursday\, August 12 and closes Monday\, September 13; studio visits will be on September 30 and October 1. \nAmanda Cachia is an independent curator and critic from Sydney\, Australia. She received her PhD in Art History\, Theory & Criticism from the University of California San Diego in 2017. Her research focuses on modern and contemporary art; curatorial studies and activism; exhibition design and access; decolonizing the museum; and the politics of embodied disability language in visual culture. She is currently working on two book projects: a monograph based on her dissertation solicited by Duke University Press\, and the edited volume Curating Access: Disability Art Activism and Creative Accommodation under contract with Routledge that includes over 30 contributors from around the world. Cachia currently teaches art history\, visual culture\, and curatorial studies at Otis College of Art and Design\, California Institute of the Arts\, California State University Long Beach\, and California State University San Marcos. She serves as caa.reviews Field Editor for West Coast Exhibitions (2020-2023). \n\n

SUMMARY:DIVERSE DISCOURSE WITH ADRIEL LUIS
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented with Asia Society Texas Center \nJoin us online on Wednesday\, October 7 at 6:30 pm for the Fall 2020 Diverse Discourse Lecture with Adriel Luis\, Memory Transplant. Luis is Curator of Digital and Emerging Practice at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center. REGISTER HERE \nWhat makes a place? What are the elements that constitute a sense of here? As of late\, most of the sites that surround us seem as remote and inaccessible as anywhere else in the world. Meanwhile\, we have learned to forge intimacy and share experiences that transcend space and borders. But can any measure of technology\, online interaction\, or knowledge accumulation from afar instill a pulse of a city\, a familiarity with culture\, and a notion of having been there – in the absence of physical presence? In Memory Transplant\, writer and curator Adriel Luis attempts to form a relationship with Houston through a series of virtual studio visits with artists\, video chats with community\, and research online. Through this process\, he reflects on the obstacles and opportunities of building community in an age of social distance. \nAdriel Luis is a community organizer\, artist\, and curator who believes that our collective imagination can make a reality where we all thrive. His life’s work is focused on bridging artistic integrity and social vigilance. He is a part of the iLL-Literacy arts collective\, which creates music and media to strengthen Black and Asian American coalitions; is creative director of Bombshelltoe\, which works with artists to highlight marginalized communities affected by nuclear issues; and collaborates with dozens of artists and organizations through his curate and design engine\, Phenomenoun. Adriel is the Curator of Digital and Emerging Practice at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center\, where he advocates for under-served communities to be treated and represented equitably by museums and institutions. He and his team have been curating Culture Labs — an alternative to museum exhibitions\, built on community-centered beliefs. \nAbout Diverse Discourse\nDiverse Discourse brings national curators\, artistic directors\, and critics to Houston to present a free public lecture and conduct studio visits with  Houston-area artists\, performers\, and writers. SUMMARY:DIVERSE DISCOURSE LECTURE: CANDICE HOPKINS
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Spring 2020 Diverse Discourse Lecture with Candice Hopkins\, independent curator and writer\, and Senior Curator\, Toronto Biennial of Art. \nDue to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic\, the content and format of the lecture has shifted. Instead of her originally planned lecture\, Sounding the Margins: Towards Decolonial Listening\, Hopkins will present\, The Golden Potlatch and the Gilded Gaze: Capitalism\, Infection\, and Early Colonialism. \n**This event will be presented live online via Zoom and Facebook Live. Registrants will receive access instructions and the Zoom link via email on Wednesday\, April 1 prior tot he event start time. Those who wish to view via Facebook Live do NOT need to preregister through Eventbrite. The recorded lecture will also be made available on DiverseWorks’ website after the event.** \nCLICK TO REGISTER \nGiven the present climate\, this lecture will center on the relationships between Indigenous economies\, extractive colonialism and its attendant metaphors of infection and sickness. Beginning in the 1800s with the Klondike Gold Rush\, early forms of capitalism and resource extraction in my homelands of Yukon\, Canada were commonly described as viral: “So infectious was the Klondike epidemic that that flimsiest rumor served to send hundreds dashing to the farthest corners of the northern hemisphere.” There remains a performative rhetoric of “sickness” associated with capitalist desire\, one which enacts the symptoms of Western colonialism while simultaneously constituting a public acknowledgment of colonialism’s existence and its inherent violence. Through looking at the relative contingencies between Indigenous economies and wealth and colonial capitalism\, this talk seeks to learn from this particular historical moment as a means to shed light on our own. — Candice Hopkins \nThe Potlatch Bug\, flyer developed for The Seattle Golden Potlatch\, July 15-20\, 1912. \nCandice Hopkins is a curator and writer of Tlingit descent originally from Whitehorse\, Yukon. Her writing and curatorial practice explore the intersections of history\, contemporary art\, and indigeneity. She works as senior curator for the Toronto Biennial of Art and was a part of the curatorial team of the Canadian Pavilion of the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019\, featuring the work of the media art collective Isuma. She is co-curator of notable exhibitions including the 2018 SITE Santa Fe Biennial\, Casa Tomada; documenta 14 in Athens\, Greece and Kassel\, Germany; Sakahàn: International Indigenous Art; Close Encounters: The Next 500 Years; and the 2014 SITElines biennial\, Unsettled Landscapes. Her writing is published widely and recent essays and presentations include “The Gilded Gaze: Wealth and Economies on the Colonial Frontier\,” for the documenta 14 Reader\, “Outlawed Social Life” for South as a State of Mind\, and Sounding the Margins: A Choir of Minor Voices at Small Projects\, Tromsø\, Norway. Hopkins has lectured internationally including at the Witte de With\, Tate Modern\, Dak’Art Biennale\, Artists Space\, Tate Britain\, Yale University\, Cornell University\, and the University of British Columbia. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Hnatyshyn Foundation Award for Curatorial Excellence in Contemporary Art and the 2016 Prix pour un essai critique sur l’art contemporain by the Foundation Prince Pierre de Monaco. Hopkins is a citizen of Carcross/Tagish First Nation. \n\nDiverse Discourse brings national curators\, artistic directors\, and critics to Houston to present a free public lecture and conduct studio visits with Houston-area artists\, performers\, and writers. SUMMARY:DIVERSE DISCOURSE LECTURE: CLAUDIA LA ROCCO
DESCRIPTION:Criticism is Dead. Long Live Criticism\nA Diverse Discourse Lecture by Claudia La Rocco \nApril 12\, 6:30 pm\, Matchbox 4\nReserve free tickets here \nClaudia La Rocco is the author of The Best Most Useless Dress (Badlands Unlimited)\, selected poetry\, performance texts\, images and criticism\, and the novel petit cadeau\, published by The Chocolate Factory Theater as both a print edition of one and a four-day\, interdisciplinary live edition. She edited I Donʼt Poem: An Anthology of Painters (Off the Park Press) and Dancers\, Buildings and People in the Streets\, the catalogue for Danspace Projectʼs PLATFORM 2015\, which she curated. Her collaborators include the choreographer Michelle Ellsworth\, the performance company Findlay//Sandsmark and the saxophonist/composer Phillip Greenlief\, with whom she is animals & giraffes. A columnist for Artforum\, a contributing editor to Emergency Index (Ugly Duckling Press)\, and writer-in-residence at On the Boards theater\, she is editor-in-chief of SFMOMA’s Open Space. \nAbout this talk\, La Rocco says:\nThe demise of traditional criticism has long been rumored. But of course it continues\, in various fits and starts\, alongside platforms that (need it be said?) make everyone a critic. What now is the role of this tradition of public thinking out loud within current public discourse\, which seems at once ever-more expansive and ever-more diminished (or at least fractured)? Here are a few attempts at answering this very big question (which is actually a series of questions)\, drawing on my years as a writer and editor. These attempts will likely be oblique. They might not work. The elucidation of ideas is\, after all\, a dicey business.  \nABOUT DIVERSE DISCOURSE\nDiverse Discourse brings national curators\, artistic directors\, and critics to Houston to present a free public lecture and conduct studio visits with selected Houston-area artists\, performers\, and writers.  Diverse Discourse provides a significant opportunity for area artists in all disciplines to have their work reviewed by a variety of distinguished arts professionals\, fostering a cultural exchange across the nation between artists and cultural producers. \nSTUDIO VISITS WITH CLAUDIA LA ROCCO\nApplication Deadline: March 20 (online)\nClick here application and more info: https://staging.diverseworks.org/in-the-works/diverse-discourse/studio-visits\nImage\, L to R: Davison Scandrett\, Silas Riener\, Claudia La Rocco and Rashaun Mitchell in Taste\, a site-specific performance and installation by Mitchell and Riener\, in collaboration with La Rocco and Scandrett.
